I Stopped Begging for Backlinks and Published One Useful Thing Instead
TLDR: Cold outreach for links was eating my team's week and returning almost nothing. So we built one original data study for a client and let it sit. Over eight months it earned 73 links from sites we never contacted, because writers needed the numbers in it.
In early 2024 I was sitting in our Casablanca office reading a report from one of my link builders. She had sent 240 outreach emails that month. We had earned four links. Four. I did the math on what those four cost us in salary hours and felt a little sick. We were renting a person's full week to write flattering emails to bloggers who deleted them on sight.
The client was a property management company in Dubai. Decent site, thin link profile, stuck on page two for everything that mattered. The usual playbook said send more emails, find more blogs, write better subject lines. I had run that playbook for years. It worked the way a slot machine works: enough pulls and something drops, but you lose money the whole time.
So I tried the opposite. Instead of asking 240 people to link to a page that gave them no reason to, we spent six weeks building one page worth linking to on its own.
The Asset Nobody Else Had Bothered to Build
We had access to something most people in that market did not: real rental and occupancy numbers across dozens of Dubai buildings, collected over two years of managing those units. Nobody had turned that into a public reference. Property journalists were quoting vague estimates because that was all they could find.
We cleaned the data, anonymized it, and turned it into a single study: average rental yield by neighborhood, occupancy rates by building age, the months when rents actually moved. Plain charts. A short methodology note so people could trust it. We did not gate it behind a form. We did not write a sales pitch around it. We published the numbers and a clear sentence anyone could quote.
This is the part that took me too long to understand. A link is a citation. Reporters and bloggers link to things they need to back up a claim. A service page gives them nothing to cite. A real number they cannot get anywhere else gives them everything. The Moz beginners guide to link building made the same point years ago, and I had read it and ignored it because outreach felt like doing something.
The Morning It Clicked
Nothing happened for the first two months. I will be honest, I almost killed the project. Then one morning, with my coffee, I was checking the client's new links and saw a referring domain I did not recognize. A regional finance site had quoted our occupancy figure in an article about the Dubai rental market. We never emailed them. They found the number, needed it, and credited us with a link.
That was the moment the whole thing made sense to me. One writer cited us. Then another writer, researching the same topic, found that first article, traced the figure back to our study, and linked to the original instead. The asset was doing the outreach. It was working at 2 a.m. while my team slept. By month eight it had pulled 73 links from sites we had never contacted, including a few with the kind of authority my outreach emails could never have reached. A breakdown of link building strategies that compound over time on the Ahrefs blog matched almost exactly what we watched happen in real time.
The client moved to page one for their main terms inside that period. Not only because of the links, but the links were the engine. And the cost was one focused build instead of a person sending emails forever.
What I Actually Tell Clients Now
I do not promise a number of links anymore. I ask a harder question first: what do you know, or have, or can measure, that nobody else in your market has published? Sometimes it is data. Sometimes it is a genuinely complete guide to a thing people keep getting wrong. Sometimes it is a free calculator that saves someone an hour. The format does not matter. The test is whether a stranger writing an article would need to point at it.
The hard truth is that most businesses have something like this sitting in a spreadsheet and never think to share it. They guard it, or they assume it is boring because they see it every day. It is not boring to the writer who needs a source. Build the one thing worth citing, put it where people can find it, and the links stop being something you chase. They become something that arrives.
If you run a business and you are tired of paying for outreach that goes nowhere, look at what you already have before you send another email. The most expensive link campaign I ever ran taught me that one honest, useful, public asset beats a year of polite begging. That single property study is still earning links today, two years on, with no one touching it.
If you want help finding and building that asset, that is exactly the kind of work we run as an SEO agency in Dubai, and we fold it into the wider plan when we work as a digital marketing agency in Dubai so the links actually feed sales rather than a vanity chart.
