Create Linkable Assets That Keep Earning Backlinks

In my experience, well-written, evergreen content that is based on real-life experience often has a very long shelf life and generates the most backlinks over time. If you can couple this with valuable graphics, a good SEO profile, and a topic area that customers return to again and again, your content will likely see more organic engagement.

For example, we created an 'Example of an IT Strategy' blog that included strategy sections that we have used for our own clients repeatedly, as well as custom graphics. It has drawn a considerable amount of organic traffic and high-quality backlinks (HubSpot and others) without ever having to do outreach.

The perfect storm in this instance was a confluence of factors: the right topic with sizable search volume, low keyword competition allowing us to rank high and quickly, expending time to include valuable information vs. just high-level advice, and getting in front of the right audience to share and build backlinks—further extending the run of the content.

The stuff that keeps earning links for us is never the clever stuff. It's the boring reference material nobody else wants to build.

We published a breakdown of handwritten note response rates versus printed direct mail, with our own numbers pulled from real customer campaigns. Envelopes that look handwritten get opened about 99% of the time, and we showed the math behind why that matters on cost per reply. That page has picked up links for over three years now because writers keep needing a number to cite, and there wasn't a good source for it.

So my filter is simple. Would somebody writing an article need to point at this to make their point? If the answer is no, it might get traffic but it won't get links.

Format matters less than people think, but original data beats opinion every time. Even small data. We're 11 people, not a research firm, and we still had enough campaign results sitting in our own system to make something citable. Most companies do and they never look.

The other thing I'd say, and this took me a while to figure out, is that you have to update the asset. We refresh ours every year with new numbers. A stale stat stops getting cited the second somebody finds a newer one.

I choose topics that answer persistent industry questions and that can be supported with unique, verifiable data so the content stays relevant long after launch. I favor formats that present that data clearly for journalists and readers, such as an aggregated statistical report or tidy dataset with concise takeaways. One asset I created was an industry statistics report compiled from public data and original polls, and it continued to earn backlinks because journalists cited its unique figures. I amplified the piece with basic keyword research and direct outreach to reporters to keep it discoverable and citable over time.

I pick topics from problems people email me about repeatedly, not keyword volume. Link builders kept asking me daily where else they could place content, so I built a free write-for-us finder tool that runs three Google searches, merges and ranks results, and returns up to 80 ranked sites per niche. Free, useful tools like that keep earning links long after launch because people reference them instead of writing the process out again. Round-up-style listicles rarely hold up the same way.

One asset that continued to attract backlinks was a template for documenting the assumptions behind content. We used it to record the audience question, source quality, intended outcome, competing viewpoints, and sensitive claims before drafting. The idea was simple, but it solved a common weakness in online publishing. Many articles appear complete while hiding the thinking behind their final message.

We found the template became linkable because it made quality easier to understand. Educators, editors, and independent publishers shared it during conversations about trust and research. Its value lasted because accountable publishing stays important across changing platforms. We create assets that turn hidden work into practical habits others reference confidently.

Most backlink strategies overvalue novelty. Novelty decays, while operational inconvenience compounds. I choose subjects where underlying facts are scattered across agencies, forms, and jurisdictions, then turn that fragmentation into a reliable decision system. The best formats make a reader faster at checking, calculating, or comparing something, giving editors a practical reason to reference them repeatedly.

A resource attracting links was a map of legal deadlines tied to common accident scenarios. It was refreshed as rules changed and included citations to official sources. The update discipline mattered as much as the original research. Over time, the page became a destination people checked before publishing, and that behavior produced links beyond launch promotion.

Most 'linkable' content fails because it's built for the reader instead of the citer — and those are two different people with two different needs. The reader wants a good article. The citer, the writer or researcher who actually gives you the backlink, wants one clean fact they can drop into their own piece and move on. I design for the second person, and the links follow. That means the topic has to hand someone a stat, a definition, or a template they can lift without reading the whole thing.

The best way to create linkable content is to create something that cannot be conveniently copied. Original survey data, living benchmarks and simple templates are some of the best ways to create linkable content. If it is easy to replicate, then your competition will replicate it and take all of your links in a year or so.

We once created a benchmark page for one of our B2C clients using their internal data. Because no other source existed for the information on that page, writers continually linked back to it. This single strategy alone assisted in increasing their keyword rankings organically, resulting in an increase of over 1,400%.

Instead of asking "Who reads my content?" ask "Who links to my content?" and build your content to meet the needs of the person linking to your content.

The asset that keeps earning links is almost always a number nobody else is willing to publish, kept current.

Everything else we have built has a half-life. Guides get outranked. Roundups go stale. Opinion pieces earn a burst of links in the first month and then nothing for two years.

The one that did not: we published the actual price ranges for digital marketing services in Morocco, by service and by scope, sourced from our own quotes and from what clients told us they had been quoted elsewhere. Nobody in our market publishes prices. Agencies here treat it as commercially dangerous.

That page has earned links continuously for over two years, from local business publications, forum threads, two university course pages, and competitors who link to it while arguing with it. The link velocity has been roughly flat rather than decaying, which is the property that matters.

Why it works: it is the answer to a question people ask constantly and cannot find anywhere. A writer covering small business costs in Morocco has to cite something. If you are the only source, you get cited by default, and citation is the natural form of a link.

Two things I would tell anyone trying to repeat this. The first is that the topic has to be one where the data does not exist yet, not one where you are producing a better version of existing data. Better loses to first. The second is that you have to update it on a schedule and say so on the page, because a dated figure stops being citable the moment it looks old. We refresh ours every six months and put the date at the top.

The format barely mattered. It is a plain page with tables. We tried a much more designed interactive version of a different dataset, and it earned a third as many links because designers link to design and writers link to facts.

The backlink assets that last are where people are forced to cite them instead of sharing out of pure enthusiasm—obligation lasts longer than enthusiasm every single time. A viral infographic gets a burst of links and then dies. A number nobody else publishes gets cited quietly for years, because every writer covering that topic eventually needs it. I chase the second kind on purpose, even though it's less exciting to launch.

When reviewing a topic, the question becomes whether there is a hole in the public record. If the data is available somewhere already, I will not pursue it further, because one cannot out-cite an already established source. A gap becomes apparent when there are questions that everybody asks, but for which nobody has data to provide accurate answers.

For example, we built content around original organic research for a legal lead-gen client, eGeneration, using data other writers couldn't easily reproduce. It kept drawing citations long after launch and was part of a run that lifted leads by 1,067% while cutting cost per lead by 95%.

Find the question your industry keeps asking and can't answer, then become the answer. That link compounds.

A durable link asset often begins with a question teams are reluctant to ask publicly. Where does execution break after strategy is approved? Why do strong ideas lose momentum across handoffs? We choose these subjects because they are persistent human problems, not temporary tactics. They also invite thoughtful references from people who have experienced the same gap between intention and operational reality.

A practical map of common growth handoff failures continued to earn backlinks after launch. It covered unclear decision rights, inconsistent definitions, delayed feedback loops, and incentives that reward local success over shared outcomes. The asset resonated because it treated execution as a leadership issue, not an individual failure. Its recommendations emphasized empathy, accountability, and systems that make good collaboration easier to sustain.

I pick the question that will still be asked after the news cycle dies.
Link bait is a launch. Evergreen links are a filing habit. In a regulated practice the topic that keeps attracting citations is the one other writers need when they are in a hurry: a named rule, a date, a who-it-affects line, an official source. The format is a short public note, not a branded essay.
The asset that continued to earn links was a change-note page. When the underlying immigration rule moved we did not publish a new thought-leadership piece. We updated the same URL, changed the date, and left the paragraph ungated. Advisers and smaller sites kept using it as background. The links arrived late and quiet. That is the point.
What I will not do is pack five related questions onto one "ultimate" URL so the asset looks fat on launch day. Fat pages rot in six months and stop being quotable. One job per URL survives.
If you want links after month three, build the page you would still defend in a screenshot. Vanity length is not an asset. A dated sentence other people can lift is.

Popularity drives links, so I build content that saves someone else's work — the piece a writer keeps open in a tab because it contains the information they'd otherwise have to research. The topics that keep attracting links aren't the trending ones; they're the evergreen "how much does X cost," "what's the average Y," and "here's the template" questions people ask the same way every year. I avoid news-pegged assets because the links dry up the moment the news cycle moves on.

On format, I lean toward things that are hard to copy: original survey data, a downloadable template, or a calculator. If someone can recreate your asset in an afternoon, they will, and they'll link to their version instead of yours.

To illustrate my argument, a B2B finance client of mine and I created a benchmarking resource based on their own numbers, and it kept building links month after launch, and this is how we took them to organic keyword growth of more than 1,000%. No one had the data, so we credited them.

There is a test I do before I publish: would a writer who finds my article link to it instead of writing their own? If the answer is no, it will not get links after week one.

The asset that keeps earning links for us is the boring procedural one: what a foreign buyer actually has to do to own property in Morocco, kept current.
I handle SEO for a luxury real estate brokerage in Marrakech, and most of our buyers are outside the country. Everything else we have published behaves the way content normally does. Beautiful area guides earn a burst of attention and then decay. Market commentary is stale in four months.
The ownership and process page has been different. It sets out whether a foreigner can own freehold, what the steps are, who is involved, what the fees come to, and how long each stage genuinely takes rather than how long it takes in the best case. It has earned links steadily rather than in a spike, from expat forums, from two relocation publications, from a law firm's resource list, and from a French property site that links to it while disagreeing with one of our figures.
Why it works: it answers a question people ask constantly and cannot find a straight answer to. Every agency in our market treats the process as something you explain on a call, which means nobody has written it down. A journalist covering North African property investment has to cite something, and if you are the only source, you get cited by default.
Two things I would tell anyone trying to repeat this. Pick a topic where the information does not exist yet rather than one where you are producing a nicer version of something that does. First beats better for links. And you have to update it on a visible schedule, because a fee figure that looks two years old stops being citable. We revise ours every six months and the date sits at the top.
Format was almost irrelevant. It is a plain page with a table and a numbered sequence. We built a far more designed guide on a different topic and it earned a fraction of the links.

I start with a citation gap, not a keyword gap. The best linkable topics answer questions journalists and publishers repeatedly need evidence for, but cannot currently support with a credible Australian source.

One example is Marketix Digital's Australian eCommerce statistics resource. Instead of compiling figures already repeated across competing articles, we combined primary datasets, calculated new comparisons and presented the findings in clear tables and charts. We also designed it to be updated as new data became available.

That durability matters. A conventional blog post gradually becomes obsolete, whereas a well-maintained research asset can remain the source publishers cite whenever they revisit the subject. My rule is simple: create something that saves the next writer from conducting the research themselves.

I pick topics and formats by researching the founders' expertise and shaping responses to fit the editorial needs of target outlets. For a health supplement client, we researched, ghostwrote, and placed founder answer pieces that served multiple functions, including driving brand awareness and generating meaningful backlinks. Those contributed pieces ran on MindBodyGreen, CNN Underscored, Parade, and Bustle and provided third-party validation for the brand. Selecting topics rooted in credible expertise and tailoring them to an outlet's format is how I build assets that earn links and visibility.

I treat backlink assets as reference materials, not campaign pages. The question is not whether a topic can attract attention this month, but whether someone writing next year will still need to point readers toward it. That mindset favors clarity, original organization, and careful sourcing.

A resource with sustained link growth was a library of concise answers to frequently misunderstood claim questions, arranged by the stage at which each question usually appears. Readers could move from immediate concerns to documentation, treatment, insurance, and resolution without searching across separate pages. Publishers linked because the structure mirrored a real reader journey. Its continuing performance came from solving confusion in sequence, which made the resource more useful than a collection of disconnected articles.

The asset that kept earning backlinks long after launch was a plainly labeled data study built from our own first-party numbers, not a listicle or a guide, because journalists and bloggers cite a number far more readily than they cite advice. We picked the topic by finding a question our own support and sales teams got asked repeatedly with no good public answer, then answered it with real data instead of opinion. That single study is still earning new referring domains 18 months after publication, well past the point where a how-to guide on the same topic had stopped attracting links. Our backlink strategy now treats every new data asset as a multi-year earning bet, not a one-time outreach push.

The assets most likely to keep earning backlinks are the ones that are genuinely difficult to replicate. That's one of the first filters I use. I'm not only asking, "Is this useful?" I'm asking, "Would someone recreating this have to invest significant time in research, analysis, or synthesis?"

I also look for topics that can serve multiple audiences. State-by-state resources work especially well because one asset can be useful to journalists, nonprofit organizations, researchers, and people looking for information about their own state.

We recently analyzed IRS Business Master File data covering 1.63 million active 501(c)(3) organizations, then calculated nonprofit density, formation trends, and mission categories across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. That created dozens of localized story angles from one national dataset. For example, Wyoming ranks 50th in total nonprofit count but 4th in nonprofit density.

Beacon is still a young brand, so I wouldn't claim that asset has been earning links for years yet. A better retrospective example is our Nonprofit Board of Directors guide, which earned a natural editorial backlink from another nonprofit-focused site without outreach.

That reinforced something I've found important: the best long-term link assets give other writers something genuinely useful to reference.

Topics that keep earning links solve permanent problems, especially in regulated industries. Our "Healthcare SEO Content Compliance Checklist" still gets links because it offers clear guidance on SEO and compliance. Making content that's both practical and rule-safe is the key. That's what our clients want when they need something that won't become outdated.

Hi,
I'm Charles Liu, founder and Marketing Director of Cubic Promote, a Sydney-based business employing around 30 people across Australia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and India.

When we create content with backlinks in mind, I usually ask one question first: would another writer have a reason to reference this?

From there, we focus on evergreen content. Original research, first-party data, statistics and detailed guides usually perform better for this because they give journalists, bloggers and marketers something specific they can cite.

One example was an article we created around Australian promotional-product statistics. We brought useful industry figures together in one place and explained what they meant for businesses, rather than just listing numbers. The article has since been referenced by other Australian marketing websites when they needed statistics around brand recall, product retention and cost per impression.

A big part of our strategy is creating citation-worthy content. The page needs to contain something useful enough that another writer would want to point readers back to the source.

We also watch for content decay, where an article gradually becomes less useful because the figures, examples or references are getting old. When better Australian data becomes available, we update the page rather than leaving it untouched.

Overall, for us, the strongest backlink content combines usefulness with originality. If someone can use your research to support a point, check a fact or save time, the page has a much better chance of earning links well after launch.

Links follow usefulness, not effort. The assets that keep earning are the ones another writer needs in order to finish their own piece. That is usually a number, a definition, or a comparison that nobody has bothered to put in one place.

So I look for topics where the honest answer is currently scattered across forums, PDFs, and vendor pages. If a writer has to dig for twenty minutes before they can state a fact in their article, that fact becomes a link magnet the moment you publish it cleanly.

Format matters less than citability. Give the number its own heading, its own sentence, and a source note. People link to the paragraph they can quote.

For a marina software client, we built the practical reference material the industry did not have in one place, written for harbour masters rather than for search engines. It keeps picking up links, and the same pages started getting cited in AI search, which is the same behaviour showing up in a different channel.

The topics that keep earning links are the ones where a specific claim is contested and nobody has settled it. Not "ultimate guide to X" — a single disputed number that other writers need and do not want to verify themselves.

Our best-performing asset is a page built around one such number. The industry repeats a figure that traces back to a hedged article from years ago, and every article since has dropped the hedge. We went to the platform's own documentation, quoted the sentence that contradicts it, printed the date we read it, and said plainly what is documented and what is folklore. It keeps getting linked because it completes a sentence other people are trying to write: "according to X, the figure everyone quotes is not published anywhere."

Format follows from that. Three things make an asset keep working:

The claim is checkable. A quote from the primary source with a date beats any amount of analysis, because the linker is borrowing your verification, not your opinion.

It is findable at the moment of doubt. The page targets the question in the words someone types when they suspect the common answer is wrong, not the words a marketer would choose.

It is maintained. This is the part everyone skips, and it is the actual reason linkable assets die. Ours are on a list with the source and the date each figure was checked; when a platform changes a rule, we find every page carrying the old number and fix it the same week. An asset that goes quietly stale keeps its rankings for a while and stops earning new links immediately, because the first person who checks it stops citing it.

What has not worked for us: original surveys with small samples, infographics, and anything shaped like a link magnet rather than an answer. If the piece would be pointless without the outreach campaign, the outreach is the asset and it stops when you stop.

One thing we look for is whether a topic will still be a live problem a year from now, not just something trending right now. Content tied to a specific current event or news cycle earns links fast but stops earning them the moment the news cycle moves on. Content built around a persistent, ongoing problem, something marketers are still dealing with regardless of what year it is, keeps earning links because people keep searching for it and keep citing whatever answers it well.

Format-wise, we favor assets built around original data or a specific reusable framework over opinion pieces, since a framework or dataset gives other writers something concrete to reference months or years later, whereas an opinion piece ages the moment industry consensus shifts even slightly.

One asset that's continued earning links well past launch was a breakdown we published on the gap between platform-reported ROAS and actual CRM-verified pipeline, using real attribution patterns we'd seen across client accounts. It wasn't tied to a specific tool, platform update, or trend; it addressed a problem that's persisted regardless of which ad platform or algorithm change is currently making news. Because of that, it's kept getting referenced in newer articles discussing attribution problems more broadly, well after the original publish date, since the core problem it described hasn't gone away and newer writers covering the same topic keep finding it as a citable source.

When choosing topics and formats to earn backlinks, I first audit the search results for a target term to see whether the current ranking pages actually answer the query. I prioritize topics where those pages are weak or unfocused and build a single, dedicated page that addresses the keyword directly. That page is structured with the keyword in the H1, meta title, opening paragraph, and clear subheadings so other sites can reference it easily. A dedicated, higher-quality page built this way has continued to earn backlinks long after launch.

One linkable asset that I created is a free Kibbe body type quiz. It gets hundreds of clicks per month to this day.

I prioritize assets that remain useful after the initial promotion ends, especially original research, data-backed explainers, and reference pages that help people make a decision or verify something.

One asset we created at MZQ Entertainment is a research article explaining why "Best Links" in backlink tools can be misleading when evaluating expired domains. Instead of only listing metrics, we documented how redirect chains, inherited links, historical context, and relevance can distort the apparent quality of a domain.

That type of content has a longer lifespan because it answers a recurring problem for SEOs and domain buyers. The key is to create something people may want to cite later, not just something they want to read today.
